(Lafayette, LA) – Frank’s recently acquired a Delmag D-138 Diesel Hammer – the largest diesel hammer in our inventory, as well as the drive pipe industry. The D-138 hammer can put out 340,000 lbs. at maximum setting and the hammer lead has a forged step down drive that can accept multiple sizes of drive pipe without changing guides. The D-138 hammer is an extremely rugged and reliable impact hammer – making it well suited for the harsh conditions of the Gulf of Mexico.

 

The weight of the hammer and the lead is 85,360 lbs. – the lead is 28,000 lbs. and the hammer itself is 57,360 lbs. The total length of the hammer in the lead is 33’ and 56” wide.

 

The first job Frank’s D-138 made was on a 72” x 48” caisson for Medco Energy off of a 235 class lift boat. It was to be used as a back-up for a S-150 Hydraulic Hammer in case the driving got too hard for the hammer to get the caisson to final penetration. The S-150 was able to drive the caisson to 132’ of penetration at 545 blows per foot at maximum energy level. The hammer was rigged down and the D-138 hammer was picked up. The first foot drove at 212 blows per foot when went down from there to a low of 106. The final penetration was 170’ at 192 blows per foot at maximum energy setting. The D-138 was able to get an additional 38’ of penetration in a sand layer.
