Frank's New 1250 Tools Surpass Expectations on First Job - Tuesday, August 07, 2007

1250 Ton Tools(Lafayette, LA) – Back in 1938 when Frank’s was founded, the average casing string weight was 150 tons. A lot of things have changed in the industry since then, but Frank’s still remains at the forefront of technology where running casing is concerned. Recently, Frank’s has designed and built the 1250 ton Elevator and 1250 ton Spider – the only such tools in the industry. “With wells being drilled to deeper depths, casing string weights are increasing to the point where existing casing tools can no longer be safely utilized,” said Frank’s Special Operations Group Manager Jeremy Angelle P.E. “Frank’s recognized the need for casing tools that have higher load ratings and incorporated the most up to date technological advancements.”

Both the 1250 ton Elevator and 1250 ton Spider are the first tools available to the industry with a safe working load of greater than 1000 tons. The unique design allows the tools to grip casing with improved resistance to slip crushing in comparison to standard casing tools. Both are equipped with Frank’s patented Interlock system that ensures that either the spider or elevator is properly set on the pipe before the companion tool is allowed to open.

The 1250 ton Elevator and 1250 ton Spider recently completed a job for Conoco Rig 201 near Lysite, Wyoming running 16” pipe with historic results. The length of the string was 14,451’ with a final buoyed weight of 1.81 million lbs. making it one of the heaviest strings ever run and the heaviest string run with a “flush mounted” spider. Other Frank’s tools utilized on the Conoco job were the Stab-Rite, Data-Trek, Backpacker and the FC-2 Fill-Up and Cementing Tool. The Frank’s Westates office out of Casper, Wyoming also assisted on the job.

Ironically, the milestone was reached on July 6, what would have been founder Frank Mosing’s 103rd birthday. “My father would have never imagined back then how far Frank’s and the industry have come,” reflected Frank’s President Donald Mosing. “As pioneering as my father was, he could never have dreamed that Frank’s would be designing and manufacturing 1250 ton tools.”
