Tong Pusher Arm

Positioning power tongs to and from well center requires placing personnel in hazardous areas and is physically demanding work. The tong is generally suspended from a line mounted in the derrick or mast, offset a distance from well center. This requires moving and holding the mass of the tong in position. The Tong Pusher Arm is designed to position the power tong mechanically, no longer relying on manpower to position and hold the tong in place. One tong operator is able to position the tong using the Pusher Arm. Modular construction allows the Pusher Arm to easily adapt to various size rigs.

 

A brake feature enables the tong operator to aim the tong at well center and then lock it in that orientation. The Pusher Arm uses air pressure from the rig to disengage the brake. The Pusher Arm also includes a sliding clutch feature to prevent overloading the derrick structure or the Pusher Arm.
